Paxos the jewel of the Ionian Sea

A lovers hideout which was chosen by the ancient gods (Poseidon - Amphitrite) and also by other great people of history (Cleopatra - Mark Anthony) to live their love surrounded by all shades of green from the thousands of olive trees, cypress trees and pine trees and by all shades of blue from the crystal clear sea with its beaches and small bays on the one side and steep cliffs, graphic caves and enormous rocks on the other.
Traditional villages, old-fashion mansions, water tanks built by the Venetians, forgotten churches and thousands of meters of stone walls cause awe and admiration.
The Paxos group of islands and islets consist of Paxos, Anti-paxos, Mogonisi, Kaltsonisi, Panagia, St. Nicholas and Dascalia. There are three small and romantic fishing villages: Gaios, Loggos and Lakka.
There are frequent ferries from Corfu, Parga and Italy to Paxos.
Despite its proximity to Corfu it has succeeded in retaining its distinctive character. Paxos is blessed by nature, which has gifted it with a unique coastal formation of cove bays, grottoes and quite beaches. Every hill is carpeted with terraced olive groves planted by venations, six centuries ago. According to mythology, Neptune created this beauty with the strike of his trident, when in need of a place to hide his godly women friends. Where is Paxos?

Gaios : is the capital of Paxos and is the largest harbour on the island
Along the harbour front and behind the square there are a number of small shops. There is a mixture of both clothing and souvenir shops.
There are mini-markets in Gaios selling a selection of provisions they normally close for siesta between 2pm and 6pm. Fresh bread is also available here, with a choice of two bakeries. These are usually open from 08.00 – 20.00, seven days a week but, as with all things Greek, the times of opening may alter!
Apart from being a picture postcard village, Gaios is a working fishing port and as such has an authentic, rather than a commercial feel. Although not cheap, a benefit of this is the wonderful fresh fish served in the restaurants – less often the case than you would imagine elsewhere in the Mediterranean!

Petrol Station
There are two petrol stations on the island, one located 500m out of Gaios the other in Magazia. They are closed during siesta and on public holidays! Please note credit cards are not accepted.
Post Office (ELTA)
The post office in Gaios is open from 9.00 – 1.30pm, Monday to Friday. Facilities include selling telephone cards as well as the traditional functions of a post office.
